New volunteers journeyed North for an intensive weekend of training at our bothy in Glen Etive!

The Edinburgh Bothy Venture programme got underway with a trip to Hope Bothy.

A hardy team of four journeyed to the bothy to complete the fencing of the tree nursery

Sat 17th - Sun 18th March, COPE Launch Weekend, Auchengillan

Participants from Edinburgh and Glasgow came together to find out more about the COPE programme and got involved in intensive team building to prepare them for the challenges of the course ahead!

Weds 7th - Thurs 8th March, Expedition for Young People from Ethnic Minorities

A group of young people from Glasgow will headed down to Stanhope bothy for an overnight taster expedition.

Fri 30th March - Tues 3rd April, LBV1 for Glasgow participants, Glen Etive

Glasgow participants enjoyed their first Long Bothy Venture at Glen Etive.

Friday 13th - Tuesday 17th April, LBV2 for Edinburgh participants, Glen Etive

Participants rafted into the bothy for a week of conservation, capsize drills and developmental session work.

Praises to Chris James, Scott Keillor, Penny Watson and Steve Woodward for their phenomenal hard work, fearless singing, dedication to tea making and support for the group process.

Fri 27th April - Tues 1st May, LBV3 for Glasgow participants, Glen Etive

The Glasgow COPErs headed north for their second LBV incorporating the challenge of a two-day canoe trip down Loch Etive.

Fri 25th - Sun 27th May, Duke of Edinburgh Weekend, Loch Voil, Trossachs

This weekend the COPE groups put their outdoor skills to the test as they took on their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze expedition. Throughout the COPE programme the participants have been developing their skills in areas such as navigation, teamwork and camp cookery and this weekend was the perfect opportunity to put them to practise.

Fri 25th - Sun 27th May, Working weekend at Glen Etive

Five fab volunteers started lime washing the bothy and sanded the tree nursery paths....

Fri 15th - Sun 17th June, Working weekend at Glen Etive

Nine extraordinary volunteers lime washed some more, mended the deer fence, shifted stones about, patched the holes in the girls' room (though Billyis adamant it is NOT the girls' room but A room), mended the chicken wire around the byre roof, collected and composted some bracken...and had lots of fun and games.

Fri 13th - Sun 15th July, Working weekend at Glen Etive

Eight conservation volunteers looked at improving the access to the bothy, by putting some chicken wire on the railway sleppers along the muddy path, and by starting to make drains along the old access path, collected and composted some bracken...and had lots of fun bringing wool insulation packs accross the river...

Fri 3rd - Sun 5th Aug, Bothy Venture 5 for Edinburgh participants at Hope

The first group of intrepid Edinburgh participants will take part in their first Bothy Venture at Hope bothy in the Borders. The weekend will include fun and games in the great outdoors with an introduction to conservation awareness and some challenging high rope activities.

Fri 10th - Sun 12th Aug, Bothy Venture 6 and 7 for Edinburgh and Glasgow participants at Stanhope

The Edinburgh and Glasgow teams joined forces for a Bothy Venture at lovely Stanhope bothy.

Volunteers Steven Hearty, Jenny Henderson, Donna Beattie, Gerry Naughton & Susan Nicol did brilliantly on what proved to be a weekend of constant surprises!

The two Edinburgh groups came together for a weekend at Glen Etive that built on everything that they have learnt and experienced on their Borders Bothy Ventures!

Sat 8th - Sun 9th Sept, COPE launch weekend for Edinburgh and Glasgow participants, Marthrown of Mabie, Dumfries

Edinburgh and Glasgow participants got together to survive a night in the forest, make incredible 'rocket stoves' as well as take on low and high rope challenges.

Fri 12th - Sun 14th Oct, Working weekend at Kinlochetive bothy.   

A weekend focused on the tree nursery and the design of the NEW garden.

  • Design of garden bed layout.
  • Sampling of sand and gravel.
  • Insulating roof with sheeps wool.

A raptuous 'hurrah!' to Team Leader Mark Archibald and his band of minions - Stephen Hearty, Gerry Naughton, Lou Evans, Jenny Henderson, Alan Rooney, David Hutchinson and Billy Ferguson.

Fri 19th - Tues 23rd Oct, Long Bothy Venture 7 for Edinburgh group at Glen Etive

The Edinburgh COPE group completed a challenging two-day canoeing expedition up Loch Etive to the bothy. On arrival they will got stuck into both conservation, group work and Pasta.

Staggering amounts of applause to Sarah Compton, Tony Burley, Andrea Elderfield, Susan Nicol, Peter Holmes and Chris Yule.  You all officially rock!  Extra kudos to Jane Bruce for coming along to help.

Fri 2nd - Tues 6th Nov, Long Bothy Venture 8 for Glasgow group at Glen Etive

Adverse weather meant the group headed east to tackle a canoe trip down the beautiful River Spey instead of taking on Loch Etive. They then journeyed west to complete a range of conservation and team-building challenges at the bothy.

Fri 16th - Sun 18th Nov, Duke of Edinburgh Expedition for Edinburgh and Glasgow groups, Loch Voil, Trossachs

The long awaited and carefully prepared expedition! Canoeing, orienteering, teamwork were all put to the test in some truly testing conditions.

Thank you to the volunteering A-Team of Ailsa Falconer, Andrea Elderfield, Ray Coane, Chris James, Angharad Halliday, Penny Watson & Alan Rooney meticulously coordinated by Kate Dix!

Rome wasn't built in a day you know. This time the troops were on a mission to bring in the clay for the build of the outdoor kitchen.

Fri 7th - Sun 9th Dec, special Bothy Venture for BME participants, Borders

A team of young people from ethnic minority communities in Glasgow joined together for a special wintry Bothy Venture in the Borders.

Thank you to Geors Richards, Kate Dix, Jo Grant and Alan Rooney for braving the snow to help out!

Sat 1st Dec, 7pm - 1am, Annual Venture Scotland Ceilidh, Rudolf Steiner School, Edinburgh

Another fantastic night for all, with some super energetic dancing, great music and over £1100 raised to support Venture Scotlands work with young people in 2008 . Thanks to the army of volunteers who helped out on the night and of course to Robin and all at the Ceilidh Collective for once again making this another memorable event.

Weds 5th Dec, 7 - 9pm, Venture Scotland Presentation Evening, the Melting Pot, Edinburgh

Participants, volunteers and our supporters from the Autumn 2007 programme came together to celebrate their fantastic achievements of the past six months.With the whole programme devised and run by the young people we were treated to films, slides, and fun solo slots as we

heard about the personal journey of the Glasgow and Edinburgh groups.

Fri 14th- Sun 16th Dec, Conservation Team Review, Marthrown Outdoor education Centre, Mabie Forest, Dumfries.

This weekend focused on reviewing the progress of conservation work at the bothy over 2007 and planned the work and training schedule for our 2008 'Kith and Kinlochetive' project.
