VolunteersOutdoor skills and qualifications

Unlike many other adventure education organisations, Venture Scotland is unusual in that volunteers play such a key role in the delivery of our service. Volunteers come from a wide variety of backgrounds with many different skills to offer, but are linked by the wish to support the vision of Venture Scotland. Please read on to learn about the different volunteer roles we offer:

Board Members are responsible for the governance of Venture Scotland. The Board is made up of a Chairperson, Secretary & Treasurer and additional members who each have responsibility for areas such as Human Resources; Health and Safety and Volunteer Development. The Board meets four times a year and follows a planned yearly cycle of meetings.

Venture Volunteers work in partnership with professional youth workers to lead our weekend residentials and activity days. This role is well-suited to volunteers with an interest in working with young people and in gaining skills in leading outdoor and/or conservation activities.

We plan to run our next Venture Volunteer training weekend at Kinlochetive Bothy from 29 June - 1st July 2012. Please get in touch if you have any questions about the role or to request an Application Form and we'll hopefully see you at the Bothy soon! Email or call 0131 475 2395.

We have an ongoing need for NGB qualified volunteers to help deliver some of our activities - if you are a Mountain Leader, Level 3 Open Canoe Coach or hold the Single Pitch Award please get in touch to discuss opportunities to get involved in leading activities on activity days or trips with us.

Volunteer Mentors work 1:1 with our young people during the second six months of our Journey programme, which is known as the 'Community Stage'. Volunteer Mentors help young people to work towards goals such as volunteering, education, training and employment as well as supporting them to further develop their confidence and to form positive peer networks. Our next training programme for Volunteer Mentors will be in June 2012. Watch this space for further details.

We also recruit volunteers to carry out maintenance and conservation work at the bothies we use in the Borders and Glen Etive. Conservation Volunteers are essential for keeping the bothies in good working order and for preparing new environmental projects for our young people to take part in. We require Conservation Team Leaders to coordinate these working trips.

If you'd like to call for an informal chat about any of the above roles please contact the Volunteer Coordinator on 0131 475 2395 or send an email to volunteer@venturescotland.org.uk.
