The Bothy
In
1988, a long term lease was secured on what has now become known
as, ‘the bothy’, a former stalker’s cottage in
Glen Etive, on the shore of Loch Etive on Scotland’s West
Coast. This bothy has become a residential base for the Programme
and services we provide.
The wilderness setting of the bothy is used to introduce course
participants to various aspects of development, through involvement
in a variety of outdoor activities and practical conservation work.
The bothy is 45 minutes walk from the nearest road and has a toilet,
cooker, fireplace, sleeping mattresses and running water but no
electricity.
We
have recently started using a second bothy in the Borders for the
initial bothy venture. ‘Hope bothy’, near Peebles, is
only 20 minutes walk from the road, and eases participants more
gently into the rigour of walking to a bothy with full kit and food
for the weekend.Residing at the Borders bothy affords the opportunity
to utilise the high ropes course and climbing wall at Wiston Lodge,
near Biggar.
