The Core Programme
The Core Programme runs from February
until November, and consists of a series of residentials based at
Kinlochetive Bothy in Glen Etive, and Stanhope Bothy in the Borders.
The
focus of the first weekend, Bothy Venture or BV, is on positive participation, in the
activities themselves and the close communal living at the bothy.
Participants and volunteers share the responsibilities for all
aspects of the weekend, including cooking, cleaning and washing
up.
Groups complete a series of icebreakers, trust games and problem
solving, which enable people to feel more at ease in a group setting.
This is all part of creating a safe learning environment where
barriers are broken down and participants feel confident about
joining in. These eventually lead to larger-scale activities such
as raft-building and abseiling, and an introduction to environmental
awareness and conservation work.
The
second weekend, Advanced Bothy Venture or ABV, builds on the first weekend with opportunities for transferring
more responsibilities to participants. Activities such as a river
traverse and an extended mountain walk increase the level of challenge
and reinforce the development aspect of the Bothy Venture, allowing
more focus on personal and social development as well as teamwork.
All
participants have the opportunity to attend monthly conservation
days which are organised in and around a city setting. This allows
a greater continuity and involvement throughout the core Programme,
and also counts towards the John
Muir Discovery Award.
